Convergence
Brazil's CAVALHEIRO. France's SEVERYNS.
Philippines' ALICDAN
A diverse group of international artists from Brazil, France and the Philippines are featured in this unique three-continent exhibit entitled "Convergence," at the Art Space of the Royal Plaza on Scotts from May 7 to June 4, 2009.
The exhibition, a fusion of three different art styles showcases the artworks of Brazilian, chinese brush painter Deise Dias Cavalheiro, French abstractionist Anne Severyns and award-winning Filipino geometric artist Wilfredo Alicdan.
Deise Dias Cavalheiro was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After arriving in Singapore in 1996, Deise became fascinated with Asia's thriving culture and turned her interest to the art of Chinese brush painting. In this exhibit, she featurers her bamboo and flower series, experimenting and exploring with different kinds of paper, new textures and colors showcasing traditional themes in a bright, colorful and unique form.
Anne Severyns is a French artist who has been living in Asia for almost twenty years. She studied graphic arts in Paris and began her career in advertising and clothes design. But painting had captivated her since childhood and remained the primary draw in her life. As a matter of fact she describes herself as “having been born with a brush in her hand”.
Wilfredo Alicdan's works are distinguished by their quaint and geometric folk representations, populated by rounded, stylized figures engaged in traditional and rural genre activities. His canvases display a sense of harmony between contrasting formal elements—while his utilization of solid colors and flat backgrounds reinforces the two-dimensionality of his paintings, his use of subtle modeling imbues his figures with rounded, human plasticity. Willy is the only Filipino artist chosen by UNICEF to work on their Unicef Cards for the benefit of all the children of the world.
